When you travel to the far east of Turkey on the Doğu Ekspresi (Orient Express), it feels as though you are traveling to the end of the world. Especially in winter, the surrounding landscapes are covered in thick snow, and the train moves through a vast, empty, windswept plateau.
It was during these journeys that I became interested in the traces of Armenian history still scattered throughout the region. In this chapter of the project, I am researching and documenting the lost Armenian ruins and the battered landscapes near the Armenian border, which has been closed since the 1990s.
Wrecks of stone buildings, adrift on a sea of undulating grass, can still be found — silent landmarks of a once-Armenian presence.
